In Serbia there are three telecommunication operator of fixed-line telephony, three mobile operator and one operator of data transmission.

Phone card (SIM card) for your mobile phone can be bought at the above mentioned locations, as well as at newsstands and kiosks. There are two types of SIM cards:

Prepaid card: these have to be activated by calling voice machine to the number 777 or by calling any subscriber number. If the card is not activated, you will not be able to receive calls.

Postpaid card: these are ready for use right away and have their value.
When you spend your phone credit, there are several options for mobile phone topup:

  • Electronic topup - via terminals at authorized distributers
  • Topup cards - available from kiosks
  • Online topup - via the operator's website
  • SMS topup - by sending an SMS from another telephone
  • Or directly at the above mentioned location of Mobile operators


Telekom Srbija is the National fixed-line telephone service. Last few years other telecommunications companies (Internet and cable providers) have also started providing fixed-line telephone services in Serbia.

The international dialing code for Serbia is 381. So, for instance, to call from your country you will have to dial:
00 - international code (or just + for mobile phones)
381 - dialing code for Serbia
34 - area code for Kragujevac
XXX - the subscriber's number

It's the same when calling abroad from Serbia, first the international code 00, followed by the dialing code of the country, the area code of the town (without the leading 0) and then finally the subscriber's number.

In order to make a phone call from the public telephone booth you would need Halo card (Halo kartica) with embedded chip.

The price, which also represents the amount of credit available for making calls, is printed on the card. These can be purchased at almost every street corner, at newsstands and kiosks.

Above mentioned mobile telephone operators provide also internet for affordable prices. There are different possibilities, one of them is buying prepaid internet package with, or without USB modem.

WI-FI Internet (free hotspots)

There are many internet hotspots where you can access the internet free of charge via your laptop or phone. Almost every café and restaurant have WI-FI and guest can use it. Also, most of the faculties and the University have wireless internet hotspots outside (including EDUROAM network).
